Throughout my teenage years my skin was pretty prone to breakouts. I would go to sleep with glowing skin and wake up the following morning covered in spots. It wasn’t only my face that suffered, but also across the top of my back…sometimes even my chest :(. By no means did I have severe acne but it was enough to steal my confidence. I tried medicated creams from the doctors on numerous occasions but nothing seemed to help completely.
As I got older the appearance of my skin improved, I am still liable to breakouts but certainly not as bad. Recently I have begun to take my skincare a lot more seriously. I’d never really given it much thought, however one day I came to the conclusion that enough was enough, I needed to take care of myself better.
What I did to improve my skin
In the past, I had never really played around with face masks before. I was always too scared to try out new things due to the sensitivity of my skin. A few months back I signed up to Birchbox and in one of my boxes I was gifted a sample size of the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Face Mask. The first time I tried it out I noticed a difference almost instantaneously, my face felt cleaner, fresher and clearer. After multiple uses the results were not only noticeable to me, but also to others.
Another mask that I love is from the L’oreal Pure Clay range, their Blemish Control Mask. I look like a smurf whenever it’s on my face, but it works wonders on my skin. It reduces redness in the blink of an eye and only takes 10 minutes to work.
Aside from masks, I tried out a new face wash, from the L’oreal Pure Clay range, I have been using the Purity wash. I was drawn to it because I’d used the mask version of this previously (also amazing). It’s a thick consistency, similar to that of their face masks, but in a squeezy tube. I like to massage this into my skin then leave on whilst I shower/brush my teeth. After using, my face looks brighter and healthier, I completely recommend trying out this collection.
I have always cleansed by skin every morning and night, to get rid of any impurities. For years now I have used the Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Lotion. It removes any excess makeup and grime that my face wash may have missed. Even though it is a cleanser it seems to have moisturising properties.
Moisturising is something I had struggled with for years. Most moisturisers contain oils which emphasise my oily/combination skin. For the past few years I have used the Nivea Daily Essentials Oil Free Moisturising Day Cream (what a mouthful). It smells amazing and helps combat the oiliness around my t-zone. This isn’t something I reach for daily, because my skin seems fine without it, but on days were I experience some dryness it really helps.
At times when I break out, particularly during that time of the month, I like to reach for two products. Funnily enough these creams are not specifically designed for spots, however they seriously do work for me. They are Savlon Antiseptic Cream and Sudocrem. The thing that makes me laugh the most, is that Sudocrem is a nappy rash cream, yes, you did hear me correctly, it is designed for babies suffering with a nappy rash! I’m basically applying cream for your bum to my face! Applying this thickly without rubbing in and leaving overnight helps reduced the appearance of blemishes. It’s so cheap and seriously amazing, a little goes a long way. I like to use Savlon when my skin isn’t too bad but I have the odd spot here and there. It’s fine to use under makeup because it absorbs into the skin as fast as a moisturiser.
Since using these products regularly, the look of my skin has significantly improved. I’ve also started to drink lots of water, it helps to flush out toxins within the body which, in turn, dramatically improves the skin. Our bodies are made up of 60% water so it is essential to be hydrated.
I hope some of you may find this useful. If you know of any products that I could try out, particularly face masks, please drop a comment so I can check it out.
Until Another Day x
