Hi, guys! It’s Soph from GirlvsWorld here, talking to you about battling depressing during lockdown. This is a part 2 of my other blog post How to Protect your Mental Wellbeing Whilst in Lockdown. Personally, I have suffered from mental health issues for as long as I can remember, but only in the past few years have I gone on medication for it and engaged properly in therapy.
For myself and many others, lockdown has either caused or worsened mental health issues (particularly depression) so I’m here today to let you guys know my top tips to help you out! So without, further ado, here are 3 tips for battling depression during lockdown:
Go for a walk every day
For some people, every day may be impossible or even just unappealing. That’s okay! I would recommend going for a walk every day as it’s great to get yourself out the house half way through the day and get some fresh air. However, even just going for a walk a few times a week is a great way to push towards battling depression during lockdown. I know from personal experience how hard it can be to get yourself up and out of bed when you have depression, but once you finally do it you will be so grateful you did – trust me, I’ve been there. Going for a walk helps clear your mind and remind you of all the nature there is to explore. It reminds you that there is life outside of the four walls you surround yourself with. It reminds you of all there is the earth has to offer.
Practice simple hygiene
To some people this may seem minor, but to many people experiencing mental illness it can be a very difficult and draining thing to do. Personal hygiene is something I struggle with massively, especially battling depression during lockdown. Sometimes I don’t see a point in keeping up with personal hygiene as I’m staying inside anyway and not seeing anyone, but then I remind myself that this is my mental illness speaking and not me. Keeping up personal hygiene for yourself is as important as ever during lockdown, if not more important, as it can maintain structure and self-worth. No matter how long it takes, getting yourself out of bed and showering (or even just brushing your teeth and hair) is so important.
Journal your thoughts
Journaling your thoughts every night, or even just when you need to vent or get something off your chest, can do wonders for battling depression during lockdown. Facetiming your friends is a great idea too as having a shoulder to cry on or someone close to you giving you some advice, but sometimes journaling is easier as it is more private and you can vent as much as you want without holding back or limiting yourself. I have found journaling to be incredibly important and helpful to me whilst battling depression during lockdown, so i hope you guys will find it just as helpful too.
